Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs) are Tier 2 testers. They are capable of assessing a length of fibre to determine its length the amount of loss and the location of events such as splices connectors and macro bends along the length of the fibre. Many now come with software that provides an icon based view of the fibre under test making interpretation of the output much easier. Most now have an auto function that varies the pulse width and test duration in order to get the best possible information and most accurate result. OTDRs come with different power outputs (dynamic range) depending on whether they are to be used for testing point to point or PON networks.
