Singlemode (OS1/OS2) uses a small core (around 9µm) to transmit light over very long distances, ideal for backbone, campus, and long-haul links.
Multimode (OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, OM5) has a larger core (50µm or 62.5µm) and is optimised for shorter distances with high bandwidth, such as data center interconnects.
Choosing between them depends on distance, bandwidth requirements, and existing infrastructure.
Common connectors in fibre optic cabling include:
- LC for small form factor, widely used in data centers and high density patching.
- SC for a push-pull design, often used in telecom and enterprise networks.
- MPO/MTP multifibre connectors supporting 8, 12, or 24 fibres for high speed parallel optics (40G, 100G, and beyond).

- Use proper bend radius guidelines to prevent signal loss or damage.
